Ultrasonic Testing (UT) Level II

DESCRIPTION:

Arrelic define Ultrasonic testing as NDT operation which uses high frequency sound waves to detect imperfections or changes in properties within the materials. It can also be used to measure the thickness of a wide range of metallic and non-metallic materials where access from one side only is available. This operation can perform either before or after machining as per the requirements.

UT Level-II Responsibility:

  • Select proper test technique, equipment and probes
  • Set up and calibrate the equipment
  • Perform testing and interpret the results as per standards
  • Have knowledge of the scope and limitations of UT
  • Be familiar with production processes of the test material and knowledge of type and location of expected defects
  • To develop UT technique for testing a particular job
  • Prepare test report for Accept, Reject, & Rework
  • Prepare written instruction for Level I
  • Guide and check test results of Level I operators
  • Responsible for care and maintenance of the NDT/UT equipment

CONTENT:

This course provides the in-depth knowledge in the principles of ultrasonic testing and the fundamentals of engineering, materials and components, such that the technician will be able to:

  • Identify the suitability of ultrasonic testing for all materials and inspection applications;
  • Develop inspection techniques and prepare procedures that can be followed by a Level 1 technician;
  • Document results of the analysis;
  • Be familiar with all regulatory codes and specifications for ultrasonic testing and their intent.

  • Unfavourable geometry of the test specimen causes problems during inspection.
  • Inspection of materials having undesirable internal structure is difficult.
  • It requires the use of a couplant.
  • The probe must be properly coupled during scanning.
  • Defect orientation affects defect detectability.

  • Reference standards and calibration required.
  • Rough surfaces can be a problem and surface preparation is necessary

Engineers, Managers, Supervisors, Quality Managers, Condition Monitoring Technicians, Engineering technicians, any non-technical (NDT) person responsible for NDT, technicians or ordering NDT techniques to maintain plant & equipment. A candidate must be completed Level-1 of UT.
